The Deep South is more than a place, it’s a mood. Life here is all about letting the good times roll, from knocking back bourbon in New Orleans’ jazz bars, to line dancing in Nashville’s country music venues. Sample that famous southern hospitality on this 15-day tour of America’s southern states, from Texas to Georgia. Pay tribute to Elvis in Graceland, join the space race in Houston, tuck into Texan barbecue in Austin, and visit the largest Mexican market outside of Mexico. Itinerary
Day 1: Hello Texas!
Get ready for a big Southern welcome as you roll into Dallas, before hitting the highway to Austin. A big city with a small-town vibe, Texas' state capital boasts great food, friendly locals, and an eclectic live music scene. Take a tour of the city's highlights before a finger lickin' Texan barbecue dinner.
Day 2: Austin
Immerse yourself in Texan life with a free day in Austin. Kit yourself out with some genuine cowboy boots, tuck into some brisket at a BBQ joint, take a guided kayak or paddleboard tour of Lady Bird Lake, and round off your day with a gig. You're in the Live Music Capital of the World after all.
Day 3: San Antonio
The colourful city of San Antonio is next on the menu, with its historic landmarks, riverside eateries, and Tex-Mex culture. Eat your way round the largest Mexican market outside of Mexico, before a walking tour of the city's best bits, from the Alamo to the lively Mission River Walk.
Day 4: Houston
Head to Texas' biggest city and spend the rest of the day exploring. With bucketloads of history, lots of cool eateries, and an illustrious position in the space race, it's one of the South's most interesting cities. Wannabe astronauts will love the optional behind the scenes pass to the NASA Space Centre.
Day 5: New Orleans
Follow the sound of jazz and the scent of voodoo-infused mysticism to the South's most hedonistic city as we travel across state lines from Texas to New Orleans, Louisiana. After dark, hit the city's raucous bars for an absinthe or join one of the intimate jazz sessions on Frenchmen Street.
Day 6: French Quarter
Kick off with a tour of the French Quarter, with its cast iron balconies and cobbled streets, before sampling sticky beignets (delicious, donut-like pastries). This evening, enjoy that famous Southern hospitality with a traditional gumbo dinner at the New Orleans School of Cooking.
Day 7: Free day
Spend your free time today marvelling at the elegant architecture, riding antique trams, or exploring the Bayou on an optional airboat tour. This evening, head to the aptly named Bourbon Street for a final night of partying, NOLA style.
Day 8: Memphis Tennessee
We've got another musical Mecca on the cards today, as we head to the home of rock n' roll. Pay your respects to Elvis with a visit to Graceland, his iconic home, and Sun Studios, where he recorded his first song, before a dose of history at the Civil Rights Museum.
Day 9: Blues & BBQs
Get under the skin of Memphis today with some free time to explore. Stroll down the Mississippi riverfront, try the famous Memphis style dry rub at one of the BBQ houses, and visit the toe-tapping Rock and Soul Museum. After dark, check out the legendary blues clubs on Beale Street.
Day 10: Nashville
Pull those cowboy boots on and head to Nashville, hometown of country music. Explore the city's laid-back taprooms, cool arts venues, and Southern-style boutiques, ahead of dinner at the famous Woolworth Theatre where the first sit in took place to desegregate lunch counters.
Days 11 - 12: Bourbon & Country
Spend the next couple of days living like a Nashville local. Taste some local whiskey at Uncle Nearest Distillery, watch a live show at the Ryman Auditorium, visit the Country Music Hall of Fame, spend a night at the Grand Old Opry and try out some line-dancing in the country bars after dark.
Day 13: End Nashville
Thanks for everything Nashville! After breakfast, it's time to say your goodbyes and get going to the airport.
