12 days from
Caribbean coastlines, colourful cities, and coffee country
From the soaring summits of the Andes to the colourful, colonial streets of Cartagena, Colombia is a country of wonders both natural and manmade. This amazing 12-day trip takes you to its biggest highlights as well as hidden gems, well off the gringo trail. Sample the best brews in the world in coffee country, stretch out on the wild, snow-white beaches of Tayrona National Park, take a scenic hike in Corcora Valley, learn about the old ways with a visit to an indigenous community, spend a night in a traditional hacienda, and wander Medellin’s infamous barrios with a local guide. Que bonito.
Day 1: Hola Bogotá
Touch down in Colombia's buzzing capital and make your way to our starting accommodation. Chill at the hotel or get exploring the city's quirky cafes, cultured museums, and colourful street art. Tonight, get your first taste of comida Colombiana at a neighbourhood restaurant.
Day 2: Cathedral & Cable Car
Visit the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira, a breathtaking church in a salt mine. Then spend the rest of the day exploring the city at your own pace. Take in one of Colombia's finest views from the Monte Serrat Cable Car, lunch on bandeja paisa at the Mercado La Concordia, and check out leafy Park 93.
Day 3: Coffee Country
Fly to Pereira, a friendly city in Colombia's beautiful 'Coffee Triangle.' Head to a coffee farm to learn more about how the famous bean is grown, and pick and taste some berries for yourself, before spending the night in a traditional hacienda surrounded by lush forest.
Day 4: Corcora Valley Trek
Take a hike in the Corcora Valley, a stunning area boasting cloud forests, rolling farmland, and the tallest palm trees in the world. Then hit Salento, a quaint town away from the gringo trail, where we'll explore the plaza, boutique shops, and colourful houses before heading back to the hacienda.
Day 5: Magical Medellin
Travel to Colombia's second city and spend the rest of the day exploring. With an epic, mountainous backdrop, high-rise skyline, perfect climate, and friendly locals, it's so much more than its violent past. Tonight, hit El Poblado's vibrant bars and restaurants for an aguardiente or two.
Day 6: Medellin Local Tour
We'll spend the whole of today getting to know the 'City of Eternal Spring' with a local guide. Tour the city by metro, cable car and on foot, checking out Plaza Botera, Santo Domingo and the infamous Communa 13 - once the most dangerous suburb in the world.
Day 7: Free Day
Today's yours to tick anything off your Medellin checklist that you haven't already. Meet the iguanas in the Botanical Gardens, check out the Museo de Antioquia, take a day trip to charming Guatapé, or just sip coffee in one of the plazas and watch the world go by. You're practically a local by now.
Day 8: Fly to Santa Marta
Take the short flight to Santa Marta today, Colombia's oldest city. Fringed by beautiful beaches and soaring mountains, it's a spectacular spot. Take a walking tour of the colourful, colonial old town, and catch some rays on the beach, before a night out with the group.
Day 9: Tayrona National Park
We're headed to one of Colombia's most beautiful destinations today. Hike through verdant jungle, past rugged mountains, on the Pueblito Trail. We'll visit a small, indigenous community, before arriving on Cabo San Juan Beach, a white crescent of sand, lapped by turquoise waters.
Day 10: Cartagena
Take the scenic drive from Santa Marta to Cartagena, one of the prettiest cities in South America. Enjoy a walking tour of the perfectly preserved streets, including a visit to the imposing Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas for dreamy views of the city below.
Day 11: Yachts & Salsa
Spend today getting to know Cartagena better. Stroll around the cobbled streets of the Old Quarter, sample some super-fresh seafood in a cevicheria, or soak up the sun on the beach. Tonight, round off your trip in style with an optional sunset yacht cruise, or a sizzling salsa class.
Day 12: Tour ends in Cartagena
After a final breakfast with the group, it's time to head home, or continue your travels in South America. See you soon.
Accommodation & Meals
We’ve hand-picked a selection of centrally located hotels for this trip. From a charming colonial style guesthouse with a courtyard pool, to a traditional hacienda immersed in lush green coffee plantations, you’ll be exploring Colombia in style. All rooms are on a twin or double-share basis. Single rooms may be available at an additional cost. Just speak to one of our travel advisors for more information.
Lots of our travellers are solo travellers, so when you book with us, we’ll pair you up with a like-minded roommate of the same sex. Our trips are great for couples or friends as well - just let us know you’re together, so we can be sure to put you in the same room.
11 breakfasts and 3 dinners are included on this trip. You’ll have the freedom to eat wherever and whenever you like the rest of the time. Meaty, flavoursome, and comforting, Comida Colombiana is influenced by local ingredients, and a mix of Spanish, African, and Arabic cuisines. From deep-fried empanadas (stuffed, savoury pastries), and sancocho (a traditional slow cooked, meat stew) to the ubiquitous bandeja paisa (lunch bowl with rice, plantain, avocado, minced meat, black sausage, and fried pork rind) and chocolate con queso (hot cheese dipped in melted chocolate), health food it isn’t, but who cares when it tastes this good?
